Week Twelve: Parliament, Oxford, Movies and Musicals, and Kitties

This past week went by really quickly, and was kind of stressful. With the semester ending soon, things are starting to be due, so there is a ton to do for class! On Monday, I went to the British Library after classes. It was so fun! There were manuscripts of first edition books, music scores, various historical documents, and just a lot of neat history! I enjoyed wandering around to see it all! We had spaghetti and ice cream for dinner and dessert, and it was so yummy! I watched Mockingjay Part 1 that night to prepare for Thursday! So overall it was a good day!

After class on Tuesday, I went with a friend to sit in on Parliament. We were able to sit in on a committee meeting in the House of Commons, and it was a fascinating meeting, discussing lowering the age to vote in local elections. I enjoyed this view into Parliament and the UK’s political process, and it was interesting to see how similar yet different it is to the US’s governmental processes. They all spoke very civilly and politely to each other, and it was just a unique experience that I am glad I was able to see.

On Wednesday we went to Oxford! As soon as we arrived I was able to go on a tour of the Bodleian Library, a huge library there! It was where they filmed parts of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, such as the library scenes and the Hospital Wing. I loved learning about the building’s history, and just the history of Oxford itself. It was so fascinating and fun to see! Afterwards, I was able to tour Christ’s Church, which has the Grand Staircase from Harry Potter, and the Great Hall there is the inspiration for the Great Hall in the movies. It’s a beautiful building! I also went to the Ashmolean Museum, which is filled with so many artifacts and things to look at that it would take hours to see it all! I was also able to go on a tour to C.S. Lewis’ home in the Kilns. It was incredible to hear his story and see how he lived, and we even saw Narnia, through the wardrobe of course. J

On Thursday I had a ton of homework to do for classes, and just stress with classes in general. Everything is due in about a week and a half, and there is a lot going on. So I spent a lot of my time doing homework. I also went with some friends and saw Mockingjay Part 2! It was an excellent movie, and I really enjoyed being able to see it! It was so good!

On Friday, a friend and I went in the morning to get five pound tickets to Matilda that night, and we went and saw the Christmas decorations at Covent Garden while we were over there. They were so pretty and fun! I did homework in the afternoon, and was able to figure more out with one of my assignments that had been particularly stressful for me, which was wonderful! That evening we went and saw Matilda, and the second time was just as amazing as the first! They did an incredible job, and it was just so fun! I really enjoyed it!! Later that night though, I received news that one of my kitties, Ivy, has passed away. And that has been really hard on me, and it was a really rough night. It has hurt a lot, but my friends have really been wonderful and have been helping me keep my mind off of everything to help me through it. She is with our dog Ellie now, and not in pain, so that is good. I love them both, and I will really miss Ivy!!

On Saturday, we had tours of the Houses of Parliament, and I really enjoyed it. I learned a lot about Parliament, and their processes, and our guide was really interesting and made the tour really fun. We walked all through the building as well, and it is gorgeous! Afterwards, a friend and I went to the Banqueting House where Charles I was executed, and then to the National Gallery. We were able to see more Impressionism and it was beautiful! We then went to Portobello Market, and walked around everything, and saw so many cute and fun little things! We got giant donuts as well! After the market, we went back to the Centre and I was able to get homework done. It was a busy day!

Overall the week was fine, though stressful and sad. I am just so very grateful for my family and for my friends! I cannot believe how fast time is going, and just how crazy these last couple weeks will be! I hope to make the most of the time I have left!
